The Bad Guy study, OT bible verses by book.

In the Old Testament there are several uses for the various terms. However, very few of them are referring to the single individual we have been identifying as The Bad Guy in the essay related to this verse by verse study. Those are noted below.

The word we read as "Devil" is never used in the OT to refer to The Bad Guy. When used in some of the translations it is lower case, not a proper noun, and is usually in plural to refer to 'demons' or 'evil spirits' and the like. The favored term for him is "Satan" and that is only used a couple of times, and we look at them as we go.

Lucifer, when used in its One Verse, is NOT a proper name, but is instead a descriptive term.

It is interesting to note that in Genesis 3, we have the Fall of Mankind, and there is no mention of The Bad Guy, and the word "sin" is not used until the scene with Cain and Able.

'Satan', as a co-star of note, doesn't appear until the scene in Job during the time of the Patriarchs, and then doesn't influence the overall story until he whispers in King David's ear in 1 Chronicles.

OT verses: It should be noted that most of the below is the raw notes from this research which involved collecting the lists made by others, wading through various concordances (including the Apocrypha where oddly enough, he is mostly absent), and topical Bibles, and then trying to sort it all out. ALSO: we probably missed stuff. Which, as it is found, will be added.

• Genesis 3 The Fall of Mankind, "the bad guy" is NEVER mentioned! (Serpent see Rev 12)
  Genesis 6 The Wickedness of Man, "Noah".... ditto.
  Genesis 19 Sodom, same.
• Numbers 22 : 22 and 32 the reference is NOT to 'bad guy' as an adversary
• Leviticus 18 : 21 .... children through fire (see Deut 31, 2 kings 17, Ps 106, Ez 16, Jer 32) This is probably an early reference to what became the cult of Ba'al which comes to a head later.
  Strictly speaking, the entity known as Ba'al, while most certainly no 'good guy', is NOT the being we would call The Devil.
• Deuteronomy 13 : 13 other gods
  Deuteronomy 32 : 17 "shed" (devils / demons) (see Ps 106)
• 1 Kings 11 "an" / "another" adversary.
  1 kings 21 : 10 "cursed God and the king"
  1 Kings 22: 21 - 23 a lying prophet from 'a spirit'
• 2 Kings 1 : 2 - 6, 16 "Baal-Zebub" (Hebrew form of Canaanite word, means Baal of the Flies). Specifically NOT our Satan.
  2 Kings 17 children through fire ( Ps 106 , Jer 32)
• 1 Chronicles 21 : 1 and 2 Samuel 24 David numbers the people, apparently "under the influence" of "Satan" as "The Adversary" (proper noun, same as in Job)
• Job 1 and 2 "Satan" as identifier of singular individual (a proper noun). In the Hebrew "has satan" means adversary / accuser.
  Not mentioned after 2:7
• Proverbs 6 : 12, 14 - 19 devises evil
  Proverbs 14:12 a way seems right
  Proverbs 16:18 "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." (see description of Lucifer's fall elsewhere)
  Proverbs 18 : 10 fortress (see psalm 91)
• Psalms 34:7 "the Lord encamps around those..." see the 'hedge' around Job in 1 : 10
  Psalm 37 : 35 "wicked in power"
  Psalm 91 : 1-2, 13 trample, verse 6 "shud" (ruin / destroy (only use of that form of the word in OT))
  Psalm 106 : 37 Sacrificed children to demons (Deut 32 , 2 Kings 17, Ez 16 etc).
  Psalms 109:6 an / the accuser
  psalm 119 : 11 .... ... ... go study.
• Ecclesiasticus (Sira) 21 : 26 - 28:
  "The heart of fools is in their mouth: but the mouth of the wise is in their heart.
  When the ungodly curseth Satan, he curseth his own soul.
  A whisperer defileth his own soul, and is hated wheresoever he dwelleth."
• Wisdom of Solomon 2 : 23 - 24
  "For God created man to be immortal, and made him to be an image of his own eternity.
  Nevertheless through envy of the devil came death into the world: and they that do hold of his side do find it."
• Isaiah 14:12-15, 16-17, 20 - Satan's fall, etc Verse 12, Lucifer. "helel" (morning star / shining one")
  Isaiah 24 : 21 - 22 "the pit" see Revelation 9 and 20 study!
• Isaiah 27:1 Leviathan
  Isaiah 34 preview of Revelation
  Isaiah 47 : 10 - 11 "trusted wickedness"
• Jeremiah 32:35 (children - fire)
• Ezekiel 16 : 21 (children - fire)
  Ezekiel 18: 4 "souls are mine" (!!!THIS!!! is a GREAT verse!)
  Ezekiel 28: 2, 6, 12-17 an interesting passage... who is it talking about?
  Ezekiel 32:7-8 God will 'put out your light'
• Baruch 4: 7 "For ye provoked him that made you by sacrificing unto devils, and not to God."
  Baruch 4:35 "For fire shall come upon her from the Everlasting, long to endure; and she shall be inhabited of devils for a great time."
  (the 'she' here is the city of Jerusalem)
• Daniel 10 and 12
  Michael 'chief of princes', "abomination of desolation"
• Micah 7:19 (sins cast into sea)
• Zechariah 3:1 - 2 High Priest with Satan standing beside him, "burning stick snatched from the fire"

"1 And as they went on their journey, they came in the evening to the river Tigris, and they lodged there.
2 And when the young man went down to wash himself, a fish leaped out of the river, and would have devoured him.
3 Then the angel said unto him, Take the fish. And the young man laid hold of the fish, and drew it to land.
4 To whom the angel said, Open the fish, and take the heart and the liver and the gall, and put them up safely.

16 And when thou shalt come into the marriage chamber, thou shalt take the ashes of perfume, and shalt lay upon them some of the heart and liver of the fish, and shalt make a smoke with it:
17 And the devil shall smell it, and flee away, and never come again any more: but when thou shalt come to her, rise up both of you, and pray to God which is merciful, who will have pity on you, and save you: fear not, for she is appointed unto thee from the beginning; and thou shalt preserve her, and she shall go with thee. Moreover I suppose that she shall bear thee children. Now when Tobias had heard these things, he loved her, and his heart was effectually joined to her."
